What it's used for

Methenamine hippurate tablets are used for the prevention or suppression of frequently recurring urinary tract infections when long-term therapy is needed. They should only be used after an infection has been cleared by other antibacterial agents.

Typical dosing

For adults and pediatric patients over 12 years old, the typical dose is 1 tablet twice daily in the morning and night. For pediatric patients aged 6 to 12 years, the dose is 1/2 to 1 tablet twice daily.

Large doses of methenamine can cause bladder irritation, painful and frequent urination, protein in the urine, and blood in the urine.
