What it's used for
Minoxidil tablets are used only for treating severe hypertension that is symptomatic or associated with target organ damage and cannot be managed with maximum therapeutic doses of a diuretic plus two other blood pressure medications.

Typical dosing
For patients over 12 years old, the recommended initial dosage is 5 mg given as a single daily dose, which can be increased to 10, 20, and up to 40 mg in single or divided doses if needed.

Minoxidil tablets must usually be taken with an adequate diuretic, such as a loop diuretic, to prevent salt and water retention and possible congestive heart failure.
Common side effects
Temporary fluid retention and swelling developed in 7% of patients who were not edematous at the start of therapy.
