What it's used for
Montelukast sodium tablets are used for the long-term control and chronic treatment of asthma, acute prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in patients 15 years and older.

Typical dosing
For asthma, the dose is taken once daily in the evening for patients 15 years and older. For preventing exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, one tablet is taken at least 2 hours before exercise.

Serious neuropsychiatric events, including agitation, aggression, depression, sleep disturbances, and suicidal thoughts and behavior, have been reported with montelukast use.
Common side effects
The most common side effects include upper respiratory infection, fever, headache, sore throat, cough, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms.
